Washington DC Pride: June
Capital Pride, or Washington DC Pride, takes place each year in early June in Washington DC. Originally named Gay Pride Day in 1975, it consisted of a one-day block party and street festival. In 1980, the P Street Festival Committee formed to take over planning. After that, it changed its name to Gay and Lesbian Pride Day in 1981. In 1997, Whitman-Walker Clinic joined One In Ten as a co-sponsor of the festival and renamed the event Capital Pride. Furthermore, the street festival moved off Freedom Plaza and onto Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 14th and 10th Streets NW. Corporate sponsors rose dramatically, reflecting the festival’s growing commercial nature. Capital Pride continued to flourish over the next several years. Per event organizers, 200,000 to 250,000 people attended both the parade and the street festival.
Today, the Capital Pride Alliance plans and executes Capital Pride. The Capital Pride Alliance, located in Washington, DC, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the LGBTA community and its partners. Furthermore, they accomplish this through educational events, entertainment, community outreach, and celebrations of diversity throughout the year. The Capital Pride Alliance serves to celebrate, educate, support, and inspire our diverse communities in order to grow and protect our legacy, history, and rights for future generations.
