Ottawa Pride: August

Ottawa Capital Pride is a full week of events that offer a lineup focusing on diversity, inclusiveness, and local talent. Appropriately, the mission of the Ottawa Pride organization is to create an environment for advocacy, education, and strong community. It does so through the Pride festival, where it welcomes everyone to participate, celebrate, and experience being a part of the LGBT community.

Annually, the Ottawa LGBTQ community and its allies come together to celebrate Pride week in the Nation’s Capital. A fundamental goal of the festival is that it is a safe space for everyone. Additionally, the idea is to spend time with friends and family, meet new people, and talk about relevant issues. More importantly, for many people it is also the time to come out and fully embrace their true identity or identities for the first time. With its theme this year, Just Be, Capital Pride recognizes the journeys people have as individuals and the journey the community shares.

Furthermore, the planners of the Ottawa Pride week have chosen to used the term “rainbow community” instead of an acronym.  Defining the spectrums of sexual and gender identity can be extremely difficult, and it is considered to be a task that is too big for any single acronym. Similarly, they find that the often used “LGBT” or “LGBTTQ” do not encompass everyone within the vibrant community.
