New York City Pride: June 23rd – 25th, 2017

On Saturday, 28 June 1969, LGBT persons rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. This riot and additional protests became a turning point in modern LGBT Rights Movement. Afterwards, Stonewall became the motivation for organizing LGBT pride marches on a much larger public scale.

Later in 1969, Craig Rodwell, Fred Sargeant, Ellen Broidy, and Linda Rhodes proposed the first pride march in New York City.  Their goal was to have an Annual Reminder of their struggle for human rights. Afterwards, their movement became more relevant, reached a greater number of people, and promoted the ideals of the struggle.  In the modern Pride era, its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost.

In order to honor the Stonewall Riots each year, a nonprofit organization called the Heritage of Pride produces New York City’s official LGBT Pride parade and events. Heritage of Pride is a founding member of the International Association of LGBT Pride Coordinators known as InterPride. InterPride is a nonprofit organization that provides support to over 180 groups that plan Pride events around the world. Accordingly, the mission of InterPride is to work toward a future without discrimination and with equality. In order to do this, they produce LGBT Pride events that foster equality, diversity, and acceptance.
