La Cucina Sabina: A cooking school program hosted by Villa La Tartaruga Sabina, a beautiful modern villa nestled in the gorgeous Sabina region, 30 minutes North of Rome. La Cucina Sabina offers week long culinary and cultural program which combines food, culture, fun and friendships into an experience of a lifetime! Transfers are provided to and from Rome Airports and the main train stations to our villa. Meals, including wine, are provided during your stay as well as culinary and cultural excursions.

Day 1:
After your transfer from the airport or train station, we welcome you with a light lunch (for early arrivals) and invite you to relax and settle at the villa while enjoying its pool and gardens. Join your hosts and other guests at La Cucina Sabina in the evening for an aperitivo followed by a welcome dinner reception and experience true Italian hospitality.

Day 2:
After breakfast, meet our chef and staff who will guide you through our program for the upcoming week. The first cooking lesson begins mid-morning in our new specially designed hands-on kitchen, surrounded by glass and scenic vistas of the gardens and countryside. After a fantastic lunch enjoying what our new Chefs have prepared, afternoon at leisure. Early evening departure for the hill top town of Palombara Sabina with tour of medieval castle and evening sunset wine and cheese reception followed by dinner in historic “Antique” restaurant.

Day 3:
Today, we take you to the northern part of Lazio and into the region of Umbria to discover a local winery and its vineyards. After a lunch combined with wine pairing from that winery, we head to Orvieto, one of the oldest towns in Europe, believed to have been inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Age. After a short drive back to the property, we come home to a traditional Italian meal prepared by our resident Chef Carla.

Day 4:
After our home made breakfast, we head out to discover the local market in Tivoli with our Chef. Learn about seasonal products and how one creates a menu from available produces, fish and meats of the day! We then discover the Villa d’Este (Included in the UNESCO world heritage list, it boasts an impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottos, plays of water, and music, it constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles). Lunch takes place at restaurant Sibilla at the foot of an ancient Roman temple. Mid-afternoon return to the Villa for a short break before starting our 2nd cooking lesson (followed by dinner).

Day 5:
Today, we have prepared for you a full day of pampering. We start with some shopping, guided by our very own personal shopper. Advice, tips on some of the best (and less crowded stores) but also visit to some of the most recognized Italian brands’ flag stores. After a light lunch, we enjoy an afternoon of wellness at a local spa before getting ready for an evening mingling with locals for a traditional Roman Aperitivo at a trendy enotica (maybe a great way to showcase your morning’s purchases?) The day would not be complete without a visit to famous Roman gelatteria (yes, you deserve it) for a sweet before heading back to the Villa.

Day 6:
On this Thursday morning, we visit and artisanal cheese dairy followed by a visit and lunch at the peaceful and serene hilltop Farfa Abbey. This afternoon, we offer you the choice between a cooking lesson (How to make a true Italian pizza using our outdoor wood oven) or an afternoon at leisure (choose from several add-on activities such as horse riding, Ferrari driving tour, massage, etc – additional costs apply). Tonight, we dine at the Villa.

Day 7:
After a morning at leisure, we head out a few minutes into the Sabine hills to visit an ancient Roman olive grove. Our lunch is a picnic (with wine please) in the middle of 2,000 year old olive trees. Your afternoon includes a few hours at leisure before heading to your final cooking lesson and graduation dinner at the Villa

Day 8:
After a light breakfast and goodbyes, transfers are provided to Rome’s airports or train stations for return trips or extended travel plans.

While all our daily activities are recommended to enjoy a unique and authentic experience, we are at our guests’ disposal to organize additional activities throughout the week such as hiking and bike rental.


Our Hosts
Villa La Tartagura Sabina is a beautiful modern villa nestled in the gorgeous Sabine hills, just outside of Rome.

The villa owes its name, Tartaruga Sabina, to the family Micheletta’s love for turtles (tartaruga is turtle in Italian, and Sabina is the name of the region). Saverio Micheletta (Giuseppe’s father and Nanci’s father in law) built the villa in the early 1980’s as the family’s country home. An inspiring work of architecture, the three-story villa was designed by Gustavo Polimeni and combines clean lines with classic Italian architecture, bringing in amazing vistas of the beautiful Roman hill tops, mountains and surrounding olive groves.

There is a state of the art specially designed demonstration kitchen. It has floor to ceiling glass on three sides so you cook as part of the environment, inspiring you by the natural beauty and wholesomeness of olive trees, rosemary and pomegranate bushes, lemon and fig trees and of course the surrounding hilltops and castles. The villa has 8 elegant refurbished guest suites including two with in-room bath tubs.

Nearly two hectares of lush English lawn replete with hundred-year-old olive trees, cypresses, cedars, orange and lemon trees dazzle the senses and make a stay at the villa an unforgettable and unique experience. Strolling along the olive tree grove towards the rose garden you will come across sculptures created especially for the villa by renowned international artists.

The stunning centerpiece is the 1,800 square foot swimming pool, itself a work of art. The pool’s bottom is a contemporary French art mosaic that extends the villa’s turtle theme.

What’s Included:

  • Transfers to and from Rome’s main train stations and airports (Fiumicino and Ciampino) are provided. Transfers will also be made to Rome hotels with central locations. 
  • Six nights lodging.
  • Four hands-on cooking lessons, all with a chef, including one with a Tuscan Chef. Lessons will focus on both traditional dishes and more contemporary recipes using fresh ingredients for healthy eating.
  • Hands on lesson using an outdoor pizza oven. Ability to assist with picking fresh herbs and produce to be used in the cooking lessons from the villa’s vegetable gardens.
  • Air conditioning, free wifi and satellite TV in each room.
  • Welcome reception dinner on Sunday, breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and a light breakfast on Saturday of departure.

    The cooking classes were fun and the tours were awesome, wish it hadon’t ended so soon, it went quick
