MapleFest Vermont Maple Sugaring Weekend! March 23-24

Maple Sugaring is a seasonal epicurean delight, an outdoor celebration to savor, and a time-honored Vermont tradition!

Local Vermont maple producers invite you to join them at their sugar houses on March 23 and 24 to sample not only new syrup, but other great ways to get your sweet fix (see nearby sugarhouse listing below). Activities are typically different at each sugar house. Weather permitting you can see first-hand how maple sap is collected and boiled down to make syrup. Some sugar makers offer horse-drawn wagon tours of their sugar bush and some have special activities for children. Others offer maple donuts, pancakes and syrup , maple candies or taffy-like “sugar on snow.”

Additional maple-themed festivities include maple liqueur tastings at nearby Saxtons River DistilleryArtisan Restaurant

Vermont’s maple sugaring typically usually runs between late February into April. When warm days and cool nights cause the sugar maples’ sap to begin to flow again, sugar-makers collect sap to boil down to pure Vermont maple syrup. In fact, it takes 40 gallons of sap to create one gallon of maple syrup.

Vermont is the nation’s leading producer of maple syrup. Producing 1.3 million gallons of syrup last year, Vermont generates over 40 percent of the country’s maple syrup. It’s no wonder Vermont calendars and cookbooks are overflowing with maple festivals and maple recipes!

Vermonters know that spring has arrived when sugaring season starts. Warm days and cold nights mean that maple sap is running, and that means that sugar makers are hard at work. But they’re not so busy that they don’t want to stop to celebrate!
