Pics: O&A Holiday Book Club December
O&A Men’s and Women’s Book Clubs combined for a special holiday celebration and book discussion to discuss a collection of short stories, The Bigness of the World, by Lori Ostlund.
It couldn’t have been a more luxurious setting for the holidays – a private dining room at the fabulous Marchand’s at the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel and Resort in St. Pete. Chef prepared the special 1925 menu for us, in honor of the year the hotel was built.
While enjoying the delicious dinner, our roomful of Book Clubbers talked about the 11 stories contained within our selected book. Each story was compelling and different in its own right, yet all explored the human connections that translate across borders and cultures, and across the vast landscapes of change within our lives. The stories were also unified by a focus on the richness and mutability of words. Along with featuring characters whose love of language was clear, the author deftly took the reader through the layered meaning of particular words or phrases within relational contexts. Throughout all, The Bigness of the World showed us a very keen observation of life.
Thanks to all of our returning members for sharing the evening and their insights on the book!
Special thanks to Sean and the entire staff at the Vinoy’s Marchand for their wonderful hospitality, and to Sarah G. for once again jumping in as our sharpshooting photographer for the evening.
