O&A at The Dali Museum

Sun
Sep ’10 19
11:00 am

o&a inks exclusive partnership with the dali museum, kicking off with this hard hat tour of the gorgeous waterfront dali expansion.

join us for this one-of-a-kind inside look at construction of the new $36 million salvador dali museum space…. in progress!

this event is part of o&a’s art series sponsored by jim conlin and the belleair office of raymond james. other events scheduled for the series are to include a tour of the southeast’s largest private collection of art which happens to contain two dali pieces. details coming soon on the art series of events.

the new dali will nearly double the size of the current museum, which houses the largest collection of works by the spanish surrealist outside spain.

one of the building’s most striking features is “the glass enigma,” made of approximately 900 geometric-shaped pieces of glass and steel struts, each piece made precisely for the one space it would occupy within the overall structure. it was part of the master design by architect yann weymouth, paying tribute to dali’s juxtaposition of the euclidean perspective and sense of depth with a surprise.

wrapped within “the glass enigma” is a three-story box-shaped museum with18-inch thick concrete walls and more than 66,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space. all of it, including the glass, is built to withstand a category 5 hurricane. dali’s art will hang on 18-foot high walls on the third floor, safe from any flooding. along with artificial light, seven separate light canons installed in the ceiling and topped with bullet-proof glass will focus reflected natural light onto selected paintings in the gallery below. on the first floor, the atrium will house a gift shop and a cafe. and in the middle, stretching from first to third floors, is a spectacular glass and concrete spiral staircase resembling the shape of a nautilus shell.

the grand opening of the new building is scheduled for  11:11 a.m. on 1/11/11, in tribute to dali’s sense of the surreal.

our event is scheduled to feature a guided hard hat tour of the new space in progress, a ‘poster talk’ hosted by a museum docent, viewing of the new museum’s architectural renderings, admission to the current museum ($17.00 value) along with a chance to mingle while enjoying a cool beverage, snacks and a complimentary real fruit smoothie from tropical smoothie cafe. AND an O&A Exclusive Discount on membership to the dali museum.

this is also one of our wear & win events, so be sure to wear o&a apparel and you’ll be eligible for our raffle drawing!
