join o&a as we once again invade american stage for an evening of brilliant theater!
about the play
a hilarious gothic spoof that won an obie award, the mystery of irma vep kicks off american stage theater’s 2010-11 season.
the play tells the story of lord edgar and his second wife, lady enid, at their home, mandacrest estate. the house staff – a saucy maid and a wolfish swineherd – develop strong opinions about timid lady enid. meanwhile, lord edgar is haunted by a ghost, and mystery begins to build about his first wife, irma vep.

this charles ludlam comedy satirizes everything from alfred hitchcock’s “rebecca” to victorian melodrama and the movie “the mummy’s curse.” it’s also a quick-change marathon in which two actors play a dozen roles and go through up to 35 costume changes. from english newlyweds, a mysterious maid, a leering manservant, a sympathetic werewolf, and a vampire, to an egyptian princess brought back to life. (yes, there is cross dressing) this campy romp will leave you breathless. ”you will laugh your face off.” –chicago tribune
