our march selection is “the kind of girl i am” by julia watts.
it chronicles the bawdy adventures of vestal jenkins, born in a dreary kentucky coal camp during the great depression, and escaping by using her one natural resource – her beauty. she explores religion, marriage, work, and finally, her true profession as a brothel madam. a finalist for the lambda literary award for lesbian fiction in 2007, this novel humorously explores the changing sexual and social mores of the south, and depicts an extraordinary woman’s experiences of triumph, heartbreak, friendship, and love.

Some questions for thought, would love to hear yours!
1. This novel follows the life of a woman who clearly chooses her own path, opposing her family’s wishes, societal pressures, and even the law. She literally reveals every possible thing about herself except for the one that perhaps mattered most. Why (at bottom) did Vestal deny herself this?
2. How (if at all) was this story about sexual relativism?
3. Since we get to see the span of Vestal’s whole lifetime, how did the backdrop of the changing times and eras affect her, if at all?
4. Were Vestal’s choices admirable? courageous? deplorable? inexcusable? Which of Vestal’s paths were already chosen for her, rather than self-determined?
5. Did Vestal end up living her life like her parents did, despite all her efforts to do just the opposite?
6. This story dwells on Vestal’s affinity to clothes, jewelry, and other material things. What did those things really represent to Vestal?
7. In terms of other elements of this novel, what did you think of the character development? And the pace, flow, and voice?
Just started reading this book yesterday. It seems like an easy read. I ordered it in electronic format from BellaBooks.com plus Amazon had it for only $7 or so. I’m sorry that I have a scheduling conflict and won’t be able to make the book club meeting on Monday, March 22nd at Peg’s in Gulfport.
I love Peg’s restaurant. For those of you that haven’t been there yet; Peg’s serves really fresh Mexican food, Cantina-style. They have a unique ambiance amongst the twinkling lights on Beach Blvd. And for those of you into the microbrews, three of their homebrews just won medals last week (2 gold and one bronze) at the Florida Home Brew Competitions.
I’ll be there.
Vestal rox!!! Good read.
Hi Barbara,
Count me in too!
Kasey
Thanks, Cathy, for sharing your thoughts about the book and Peg’s (yes, the food and brews should be GREAT)! So sorry you can’t join us, but we’ll catch you next month.
Thanks, Sarah and Kasey, for your rsvps. YES, Vestal is somethin’ else, isn’t she. A little Loretta Lynn (coalminer’s daughter), mixed with a little Dolly Parton, mixed with a big spoonful of Madonna.
I’ll be there!
Great! Thanks for letting me know, Mandy!
I would like to visit tomorrow, for my first time. I finally got my book on Friday.
Awesome — will see you then!
