Gentlemen:
I struggled with this month’s selection because it is a brilliant novel, by a brilliant author, that was made into a not-so-brilliant movie with Colin Ferrell and Robin Wright (GASP). No nudity, but some pretty hot man-on-man kissing. YOU MAY NOT RENT THE MOVIE UNTIL YOU READ THE BOOK! NO CHEATING BOYS!!
But Stephen, my significantly better half, encouraged me to follow my gut and go ahead with “A Home at the End of the World.” Please trust me on this one and give it a good try.
Michael Cunningham is best known for “The Hours” — which was also made into a movie with the lovely Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore. He is a GREAT contemporary writer and worth out time and consideration.
Please BLOG and let me know how you are enjoying the book!!
xoxo Will
I have started the read. See everyone on Feb.16th.
Jim
Hi all-I love this book as well Will, and think you made an excellent choice.
Although I enjoyed he movie version, I agree that the book must be read first-Cunningham is such a good writer, wonderful word pictures, and a voice that needs to be heard in your head…
Thanks again for picking a winner.
Robert
Hi all,
I just got the book in the mail today. I started reading, I saw the movie, so not sure if that is an advantage or disadvantage. I will try to keep an open mind and not compare it to the movie.

Hi, Guys~ I am new in the area and would like to attend the meeting on the 16th. I never saw the movie and I am nearly done with the book. So far, a great read and it has been a good recommendation. Can someone email me or let me know the meeting spot? Thanks. ~James

keep the tissues handy
Have the book, just need to actually read it.
(And, honestly, Colin Ferrell was wicked hot in the movie. Not too bright, but wicked hot. Hopefully my imagination is hotter….)
Yep. I’ll be there. Looking foward to it.
Wish I could come, but still stuck in keyboarding class
… Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
You’ll be missed Pat!
Sorry to miss this one, on vacation next week.
Hi everyone! Will, I loved the book. It will be great to see everyone on Tuesday. Until then hope you have a good frest of the week and weekend.
Jim
Ill be there. Good book, but not as ‘cant-wait-to-get-to-the-next-chapter’ as the last one.
I’ll be there too. Cunningham’s phrasing seems short and choppy compared to Aciman’s; The flow is just so different. I read The Hours years ago, but it
seems he writes men better than women. I’ll watch the DVD this weekend
after I’ve finished the novel.
good song to end the book on
love the author’s taste in music
looking forward to the discussion to help process what i’ve read
see ya’ll then…
Madame George by Van Morrison
Down on cyprus avenue
With a childlike vision leaping into view
Clicking, clacking of the high heeled shoe
Ford & fitzroy, madame george
Marching with the soldier boy behind
Hes much older with hat on drinking wine
And that smell of sweet perfume comes drifting through
The cool night air like shalimar
And outside theyre making all the stops
The kids out in the street collecting bottle-tops
Gone for cigarettes and matches in the shops
Happy taken madame george
Thats when you fall
Whoa, thats when you fall
Yeah, thats when you fall
When you fall into a trance
A sitting on a sofa playing games of chance
With your folded arms and history books you glance
Into the eyes of madame george
And you think you found the bag
Youre getting weaker and your knees begin to sag
In the corner playing dominoes in drag
The one and only madame george
And then from outside the frosty window raps
She jumps up and says lord have mercy I think its the cops
And immediately drops everything she gots
Down into the street below
And you know you gotta go
On that train from dublin up to sandy row
Throwing pennies at the bridges down below
And the rain, hail, sleet, and snow
Say goodbye to madame george
Dry your eye for madame george
Wonder why for madame george
And as you leave, the room is filled with music, laughing, music,
Dancing, music all around the room
And all the little boys come around, walking away from it all
So cold
And as youre about to leave
She jumps up and says hey love, you forgot your gloves
And the gloves to love to love the gloves…
To say goodbye to madame george
Dry your eye for madame george
Wonder why for madame george
Dry your eyes for madame george
Say goodbye in the wind and the rain on the back street
In the backstreet, in the back street
Say goodbye to madame george
In the backstreet, in the back street, in the back street
Down home, down home in the back street
Gotta go
Say goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Dry your eye your eye your eye your eye your eye…
Say goodbye to madame george
And the loves to love to love the love
Say goodbye
Oooooo
Mmmmmmm
Say goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye to madame george
Dry your eye for madame george
Wonder why for madame george
The loves to love the loves to love the loves to love…
Say goodbye, goodbye
Get on the train
Get on the train, the train, the train…
This is the train, this is the train…
Whoa, say goodbye, goodbye….
Get on the train, get on the train…
just read i love you phillip morris
since it’s a true story written by a journalist, & a hit movie in france (starring jim carey & ewan mcgregor) i was hoping it’s the next midnight in the garden of good & evil
but it’s not
a few editorial erros jumped off the page at me
the main character– who has an iq of 163– really does belong behind bars– forever!
the story mainly reminded me why i don’t do criminal defense work anymore
I don’t like some of the characters. There is some stereotyping on one of them. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.
don’t forget today is mardi gras!
next to new orleans, ybor is a pretty good place to be tonight
