Wow — what a novel! I can’t wait for our discussion! Here are some questions I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
1. What role does music have in this novel? Does it change the way you related to the story or understood the characters? If so, how?
2. What IS Allison’s story? Who is she, and how does she relate to the girl in the story her mother told her as a child?
3. Modeling and the fashion world clearly influence Allison’s perspective. What is it in that world that, at bottom, lures Allison in, and what keeps drawing her back?
4. What was Allison’s “heaven” — and what did you think of her references to heaven and hell? How did that help you understand her character?
5. We’ve read other novels with time-shifting and multiple layers of reality – how does this one compare?
6. The writing style here is such a extraordinary combination of gritty, stark, yet rich; dense yet ethereal. And, often, it almost reads like free association. Yet somehow the reader not only still understands it, but also feels it. It’s sensate. How does Gaitskill accomplish that? What passages struck you that way?
7. What did you think of Gaitskill’s use of juxtaposition in this novel?
8. How did the passages describing Allison’s family and her relationships with family members differ from the rest of the novel?
9. Who was Veronica, and why is this novel given her name?
Hey, Barb. I just paid my dues for the book club and am planning to be there tomorrow night. Looking forward to it.
Thanks, Jeannie! Look forward to seeing you there!
