  4. Carl says:

I’m reading the novel and like it! Aciman’s writing style flows beautifully. When Elio says to Oliver “if you only knew how little I know about the things that really matter”, my heart just ached for him!

  5. Perhaps you would be interested in my new fictional work, “The Amen Heresy” which is a mystery/thriller exploring the historic origins of the God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

I would be happy to donate a book as a prize as well as make myself available for a 1/2 hour conference call about the book. Unsolicited reviews can be found on Amazon.

  16. will freshwater says:

Hi Everyone!! Whew — what a book! I had trouble with the questions because there was JUST SO MUCH! See you all tonight!

    1. Read the jacket flap – do you agree/disagree that this is a love story?

    2. What is the attraction between Oliver and Elio? Physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual – why does each find the other so compelling?

    3. How does Elio deal with his awakening sexuality? Is either character really gay/bisexual?

    4. Discuss the inter dynamics between Elio and Oliver – the code between them, hot/cold, flirting, wooing, avoidance, jealousy, desire, etc.

    5. What ultimately brings Oliver and Elio together on Monet’s Berm?

    6. What do you like/dislike about Elio? About Oliver? How are the two characters similar and how are they fundamentally different?

    7. Discuss the strange exchanging of identities throughout the story – sleeping in each other’s rooms, wearing each other’s clothing, and exchanging names? What does it mean to “call me by your name?”

    8. Discuss the pacing of the novel – it begins over the course of a summer – their romance is six weeks – they spend three days in Rome – then the story accelerates over years, then decades. How does the author develop the themes of timelessness/ forever and now/later? ‘If not later, when?”

    9. What does Elio really want from Oliver – to be like him, to be him, or to have him?

    10. “You’ll kill me if you stop?” What does this mean? Fear and boldness push him forward – he is aroused “because it was born from arousal.” (Page 127)

    11. How does sex with Oliver affect Elio? What does he feel and how does it change the way he sees himself (Page 133)?

    12. Why does Oliver eat the peach? Why does Elio cry when he does? For what is he so grateful (Page 149)?

    13. What is the San Clemente Syndrome – do Oliver and Elio have it (Page 192)?

    14. How does Elio react to their parting at the end of the summer? Why isn’t he more distraught?

    15. What is the ultimate effect of the romance on the lives of Elio and Oliver? Why doesn’t the author end the story at the end of summer?

  17. Jim Huston says:

I will be there this evening. Loved the book and can’t to discuss it. Are peaches on the menu?

  18. jim says:

Wow Will. This is the first time I have been actually able to attend on of the meetings and your questions are great! So looking forward to this evening and the discussion. First read this book about two years agao and loved it as much then as now. Looking forward to hearing what others think about it.

Have something to say?
