story
“Traversing decades and continents, Comfort Food for Breakups is an elegiac, sensual, and beguiling memoir about food, family, and personal history . . .. In these intimate vignettes, food—soup, eggs, chocolate truffle cake, perogies—nourishes, comforts, and heals the wounds of the past. * * * Thoughtful, moving, and passionate, Comfort Food for Breakups muses upon the ways in which food intersects with a nexus of hungers: for intimacy, for sex, for home.” –Arsenal Pulp Press

No doubt we will have a lively discussion at this meeting! Here are just a few questions we might pursue:
1. were the recipes an asset to this book? how did they affect your relationship to these stories and the author?
2. what did you think of the author’s descriptions of food, more generally? how did it affect the stories?
3. what did you think about the author’s description of people (especially those important to her) in this book?
4. overall, did the author’s writing style appeal to you? did it serve the author’s purpose? and how did it affect the images projected in your mind as you read the book? (what was the tone or quality of the images, if you could relate it to a style of photography, for example?)
5. apart from food, what other threads connect the chapters of this book?
6. the book seems to take a shift at the end of the “Potatoes” chapter – what was the shift?
7. why does the author describe herself as a hungry girl?
Not sure if I need to RSVP for the book club tomorrow, but I will be there!
Yes! We appreciate the rsvp so we have a headcount! Thanks, Jessica. See you tomorrow!
Thanks to all for such a great discussion! Loved hearing your thoughts about this wonderful book, and sharing such a good meal. Special welcome to O&A newcomers Karen, Kasey, and Alma. And congrats to Karen on being this month’s book award winner!
