the book came today!
looking forward to reading it
& seeing everyone again at the next meeting
hoping i won’t put off reading it until the night before, like always?
I’m still waiting on mine. And, like you, I hope not to wait until the last three days! January’s book is to be announced soon too!
I haven’t started reading the book yet – I am reading “Boy Midflight” by Charlie David. Would make a good book for the book club. Very sweet.
My book finally arrived today, I’m eager to dig my teeth into it! News Flash….January Book Club to unite both O&A Men’s and Women’s Book Clubs….AND feature O&A Book Club Author.
I AM GOING TO PURCHASE AN EREADER AND WILL PROBABLY GO WITH A KINDLE, OR MAYBE A SONY.
ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON EITHER DEVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS,
ED
Well I don’t usually read fiction but I’m gonna give this a try. The book arrives Saturday. I should be able read the back cover at least lol.
Look forward to seeing you next week Neal….I’m just now picking up the book myself.
Hello everyone!! Below are some sample questions for the discussion tonight. I am looking forward to seeing you all! PLEASE feel free to post your own questions and/or post responses to these questions. We want to get people thinking!
1. What is this book really about? Why is it titled “True Enough?”
2. Compare and contrast the relationship of Jane and Thomas, Russell and Desmond. What are they similar/different?
3. Discuss how the extramarital activities of the characters affect their relationships and shape the truth of the lives they are living. What are they characters really searching for?
a. Desmond and Brian
b. Jane and Dale
c. Peter and Sandy
4. How does Desmond’s search for the essential truth of Pauline Anderson parallel the searching he is doing in his own life?
5. Why does Jane make lists? Who is she trying to deceive by writing in code?
6. What’s up with Gerald? Who is the better parent, Jane or Thomas and why?
7. Was Russell really having an affair or is Desmond reaching for something to justify his own dissatisfaction?
8. While introspective and critical of their relationships, neither Jane nor Desmond seems motivated to escape their dead-end, passionless jobs. Why?
9. Talk about Rosemary and her book “Dead Husband.” How is she different from the other characters? Why is she so prominently featured at the end of the book?
Post-script: Folks, I *REALLY* enjoyed this book and out discussion. Thanks for not ruining the big surprise at the end!
Will:
Enjoyed the meeting and discussion and our brief chat last night very much.
Samuel Delany’s website is
http://www.samuelrdelany.com
I think you might find one or two of his works of interest for a future discussion.
There is also a documentary about his work that I have not yet seen though it is available on Netflix.
