Adapted from an award-winning play by Claudia Allen, Hannah Free stars Sharon Gless (Cagney & Lacey) as the adventurous and unapologetically butch Hannah. Her deep and abiding love for Rachel, a strong but quiet homemaker with a religious upbringing, has remained steadfast for decades; the two women have quietly built a life together, soulmates since the day they first met as children.

Both women are now in a nursing home; Hannah as stubbornly resilient as ever, and Rachel languishing in another wing. Hannah, ostracized and barred from visiting the comatose Rachel, welcomes the intervention of a mysterious young woman who brings the two women together.

Forced to reconcile her own desires with those of Rachel’s homophobic family, Hannah reflects on their life together through a series of flashbacks. What is revealed is a multi-layered and poignant portrait of how the two women maintained a passionate lifelong love affair despite a marriage, infidelities, war and family denial.

Questioning mattersof same-sex partners’ rights, the definition of family and the difficulties involved in seeing your loved ones become old and fragile, both characters are revealed to be courageous in entirely different ways.
